Skin & Cancer FactsA major cause of skin damage is excessive UV, which is increasing due to world-wide environmental changes. Skin damage often results in premature ageing and skin cancer. Most at risk are those with fair skin that burns easily. The colour of skin depends on a pigment called melanin. Melanin protects the skin by absorbing harmful UV radiation. Excessive UV causes melanin to darken, producing a suntan. Black skin has more melanin than white skin and therefore achieves superior sun protection. There are two types of melanin pigmentation - one is the genetically inherited 'skin tone' which we are born with and the other is caused by sun exposure in the form of a tan. |
