Skin & Cancer Facts - Skin CancerAccording to Cancer Research UK, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with an estimated 100,000 new cases every year. There are two main types of skin cancer, melanoma and non-melanoma. Melanoma is the least common but most serious type of skin cancer, with 8,000 new cases each year in the UK and 1,800 deaths. In the UK, melanoma skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the 20 - 39 age group and rates are rising faster than any other cancer. It is estimated that about 85% of cases are caused by sunburn. Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common but less serious type of skin cancer. The majority are either Basal Cell Carcinomas (also known as 'rodent ulcers'), or Squamous Cell Carcinomas (also known as Bowen's Disease). |
