"We get a result within 2 or 3 days – that’s brilliant for patients who are not waiting for an unnecessary hospital appointment. The patient gets reassurance really quickly and so does the doctor. It's also a huge financial saving for the NHS, which is important in these times of financial constraints".
Dr Maria Read,
Dovercourt Surgery, Sheffield.
TELEDerm® - bringing high quality care, closer to home.
TELEDerm®, our award winning dermatology imaging service, is also now available to NHS PCTs and GP Consortium.
The service is clinically proven to increase the quality of diagnosis of pigmented lesions or moles in NHS primary care. It can support GPs in the triage of patients with pigmented lesions or moles where a 2 week wait referral is not required but further investigation for skin cancer is required.
TELEDerm® provides GPs with rapid access to expert investigations of dermoscopic images in compliance with current NICE Guidance and the Cancer Reform Strategy. GPs using TELEDerm® achieve:
- A 75% reduction in patients with benign pigmented lesions and moles referred unnecessarily to secondary care, leading to a 50% reduction in dermatology spending per patient and reduced pressure on 18 week hospital waits.
- A significant reduction in the number of patients with melanoma initially misdiagnosed by GPs
(currently 1 in 3 ), leading to prompt hospital treatment and improved prognosis.
Case Study 1
"Telederm has reduced unnecessary referrals to hospital by 75%. The service has resulted in significant cost savings for the PCT and has reduced waiting times for dermatology from 13 weeks to 6 weeks. The service has proved popular with GPs and has helped increase GP skills and confidence levels in this area." Sue Luff, Lead Commissioner, Dermatology, NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent.

Case Study 2
"Telederm gives our patients better access to care with more timely results – it is an excellent community based service. We saved £10,000 within the first two months and savings continue to grow. The service has been a very easy to set up and run with small initial set up overheads, so the cost savings have been felt immediately by the Consortium." Mr Paul Wike, Sheffield PCT GP Consortium Lead Manager.
